The lower Laguna Madre
The lower Laguna Madre, bordered by the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge and the Padre National Seashore, is one of 5 hyper saline lagoons in the world, encompassing 270 sq. miles. This laguna supports the most extensive seagrass meadows in the western Gulf of Mexico. The lower Laguna Madre is a vast, coastal embayment that creates prime habitat for fish, birds, and other inhabitants of this unique eco-system. The shallow, lower Laguna Madre has an average depth of 2-3 1/2’ and is known for the best saltwater fly fishing on the Texas coast.
Fishing areas include the spoil islands which are parallel to the intracoastal waterway, the intricate westside with its flats, back bays, cuts, and channels, then the east side of the laguna with it dominate sand bottom, lush green grass beds & gin clear water.
